Stella Gitelman Willoughby, an incoming freshman at Berklee College of Music, received the OppU Achievers Scholarship in May 2018.

I am an unlikely achiever. I stumble daily—literally from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and seizures, metaphorically from autism, dyslexia, and a mood disorder. Every moment is unpredictable; I balance precariously. I fight to regulate my senses, emotions, and body in space. It is only once I fall that I can pick myself up, rebalance from my misstep, and move forward.

Through my music composition, I steady myself. Rooted on the piano bench, rapt in sound, improvising melodies and harmonies, quickly notating ideas, I am in command. My dysregulation, stress, anxiety, instability—my obstacles—become music. I work my tension into minor triads or uncomfortable intervals, possibly a tritone. Gaining calm and control, I conclude the Largo movement and the music develops into a brighter Allegro or Vivace. I might boldly attempt triplet passages, with accelerando.

My musical expressions, the embodiment of my challenges, have won awards nationally and internationally. I am an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award winner. Concert halls in Boston, Manhattan, St. Louis, Honolulu, Canada and Italy, have echoed with sounds of my compositions. I have received commissions from members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada and had my work played by members of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. My pieces have been performed at renowned venues such as Old South Church in Boston and Lincoln Center in New York. At each performance and with every award, I recall my unsteady journey to this blissful moment. I relish and savor the present.

My goal is to be a professional classical music composer. When I compose, I am at my best. I am smiling. I feel capable and confident. Since becoming a teen, my parents have instilled in me the need to develop self-advocacy skills and work toward independence and financially supporting myself. Through music composition, I know I can succeed. I have already laid the foundation from which to build a career. For these reasons, I choose to pursue a degree in music composition.

Tomorrow I may wake up feeling physically or emotionally insecure. My joints or ligaments might feel particularly tight or abnormally loose, I may be overwhelmed by assignments, struggle with hearing loss I experience with seizures, or simply be over-stimulated by fluorescent lighting. Yet, I will seep into the piano bench. I will start anew, equipped with blank staff paper and a pencil. I know I can achieve; I’ve done it before. I will right, and write, my woes into wins.

Through my music, I hope to bring beauty and joy to others and inspire strength in them to confront their challenges. My dream is that one day a child will be so moved by my music that she will say, “I too want to write music!” Or, when someone needs cheering up, he will hear my music and say, “I feel much better.” Most of all, I hope that a person with similar struggles to mine will listen and say, “Wow, I now know that one day I too can achieve and excel at my passion!”

Jarai Njie, a pre-med student at the University of Florida, won the OppU Achievers Scholarship in August of 2018.

Being born in America to West African parents meant that I had to grow up in West Africa as my parents didn’t have legal residential status. Growing up as a young West African girl in The Gambia, I experienced numerous stereotypes emphasizing what a female cannot educationally achieve.

This has always motivated me to pursue an education that will enable me to break such stereotypes. I’ve always been influenced and inspired by humanitarians all over the world, however, nothing inspired me more than being brought up in a country with a healthcare system that was as deteriorated as that of The Gambia’s. I was raised in an environment where the simple flu or stomachache took one’s life within a matter of days. I saw my sister experience two stillbirths simply because prenatal care is almost nonexistent in The Gambia. All these things motivated me.

The thought of young Gambian girls facing female genital mutilation (FGM) and confirming early marriage plays a significant role in my life as I am only lucky to have escaped these circumstances. I have worked with the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) to raise awareness about FGM. RVTH frequently sent young educated girls like me to form friendly relationships with underprivileged girls who were susceptible to FGM. My role during such missionary trips was to enlighten families about the medical risks and emotional trauma that FGM poses on girls.

At the age of 16, my parents raised enough money to be able to send me back to my country of birth, America. Upon arrival, I beat the odds of being another girl without a post-secondary education. While completing my high school education, I took seven AP classes every semester, competed in student congress debate (as I was fascinated by American politics), and I joined the student government in order to implement a non-profit cause; The Water Project. As the founder of The Water Project, I raised over $500 in order to enable access to clean water to a needy village in The Gambia.

As I speak today, I am a very proud African-American Gator studying public health with pre-med at the University of Florida where I continue to heavily indulge in community service work. As the treasurer of the African Student Union, my main purpose is to skew funds towards the needy in Alachua County. Every other weekend, we partner with the Ronald McDonald members to feed the homeless and needy.

As a college junior taking 18 credits and juggling two jobs my main goal is to pursue my best academic capabilities as I get ready for the real world. My mission in life will always be to join the helping hands of today as I contribute to a better tomorrow as I work relentlessly towards becoming a gynecologist to help underprivileged women all over the world.

I wish I could entirely express my life goals and experiences in only 500 words, however, one thing I can say is that I wouldn’t change my journey for any other as I am more than grateful for every learning experience that I have overcome in my life.

Anthony O’Leary, a senior at Kearny High School in California, won a scholarship in November 2019.

William Samuel Johnson once made a statement, “He knows not his own strength who hath not met adversity.” I have spent one-third of my life in foster homes due to abuse by my parents. My mother had me at 15 and punished me for “ruining” her life. When she left, my father was a single parent and high school dropout with few opportunities, thus his anger was directed at me. My second trip to the child protective system was my last and I ended up in a loving home.

In looking back at the person I was at age 12, turmoil surrounded me. I heard that I wasn’t college material, I had no mother in my life, I had a father that was angry at me, I thought little of myself, and I had no contact with my little brother for a year. The easiest path would have been to choose anger and bitterness, and give up. Instead, I volunteered to help those agencies that helped me along the way. My character and strength developed out of my struggles.

During this time, a lot of agencies offered me support, so at age 13, I contacted them and offered my support. At first, I was nervous, but suddenly my problems started fading as I started volunteering. The community servant in me was born. I joined a panel of foster youth to help recruit advocates. I gave keynote speeches at fundraising events that raised more than two million dollars. Suddenly, community leaders wanted to speak to me and my story of triumph inspired others. At age 14, the mayor of San Diego appointed me to the San Diego Youth Commission. I founded my own organization, “Elevate Foster Youth,” which is designed to provide referrals or resources to foster youth. My current project is developing a music studio where foster youth can record their own music, expressing their innermost feelings about their lives. I was one of five students nationally to receive a $2,000 grant towards my work through a Power of Children Award. Later, I was interviewed by a local news station as a Voices for Children advocate.

My experiences have made me a better person. I have developed a keen sense of humor, which not only helped me through tough times, but it helps me each day in my interaction with others. I have worked with and met diverse groups of people from all walks of life, polishing my communication skills at every turn. When faced with obstacles that may seem impossible to many, I feel little trepidation and I am happy to meet the challenges. Personally, I have compassion for others and a desire to help those less fortunate. Finally, I am determined to succeed. I am excited to begin college in the fall of 2019 and work towards a career in a management field that will utilize my strengths. In thinking of that Samuel Johnson quote, I have met adversity and I am stronger because of it.

From the earliest days of my childhood, I held a profound calling in my heart, one that transcended the stereotypical dreams of a young girl. While others aspired to become doctors or astronauts, my destiny was rooted in a deep-seated passion for environmental conservation. This calling has guided my actions and decisions throughout my life, and in the past few years, it has crystallized into an unwavering commitment. The pivotal moment occurred during a visit to my mother’s home in Maryland a few summers ago.

In my childhood bedroom, framed memorabilia from my younger years adorned the walls. It was there, one evening, that I stumbled upon an old article dating back to my third year of elementary school. As I revisited that article, penned thirteen years ago, a smile crossed my face, and I realized that my life’s purpose had been etched in my heart all along—to dedicate my career to the conservation and preservation of our precious ecosystems.

During my third-grade year, we undertook a project to enhance biodiversity along a local creek by planting various flora to attract diverse organisms. Tragically, older teenagers vandalized our efforts, stealing our plants and trampling upon the fragile ecosystem. Outraged by this destruction, I felt compelled to raise awareness and stop such environmental harm. It was my subsequent article that found its way into our town newspaper.

Despite being just a third-grader, the environmental devastation left a profound impact on me, one that continues to shape my outlook on the world today. This experience fueled my unwavering passion for conservation and set me on a path to become an advocate for the Earth.

My desire to embark on an educational journey to Montverde, Costa Rica, in pursuit of the Tropical Ecology and Conservation program for the Spring of 2009 has driven me to apply for financial aid through the John E. Bowman Travel Grants, CIEE International Study Programs Scholarships, and the Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship for studies in Tropical Biology.

Throughout my life, I have remained resolute in my dedication to preserving our planet. It became evident as I began my college career that my focus should revolve around wildlife conservation. When I learned about the program in Costa Rica, I was overjoyed. Participating in this unique opportunity will prepare me for my future career goals and facilitate my growth as a conservationist and a young woman. By working alongside other scientists in the field, I will be able to apply the knowledge and resources gained during my coursework to real-world situations.

My experiences in Costa Rica will provide me with hands-on experience and enrich my current education, enabling me to make tangible contributions to tropical forest conservation while deepening my cultural understanding of the world.

I come from a broken home and was raised by my mother on a very low income. Consequently, I receive minimal financial support from my family and the federal government to fund my college education. This has placed me in a position of extreme financial need, and throughout my life, I have relied on sheer determination and hard work to pursue my dreams.

Over the past five years, I have faced the challenge of securing sufficient federal loans to pay for my tuition. I have worked night shifts while attending school to make ends meet. However, these challenges have only strengthened my resolve and passion for my goals.

My situation has recently intensified; rather than working full-time during the summer to save money, I have been attending summer school to complete required courses before my departure for the program in Costa Rica. The rigorous demands of summer school have left me with no time for part-time employment. Therefore, I am heavily reliant on grants and scholarships to realize this incredible opportunity.

These scholarships and grants will play a pivotal role in helping me achieve my goals. They will provide essential financial support for my trip to Costa Rica. Ultimately, they will empower me to receive a first-rate education in an extraordinary country, and I will apply this knowledge to protect our endangered ecosystems. Moreover, they will enable me to disseminate my newfound insights and knowledge, further educating those around me. My plan includes teaching in conservation programs like the Student Conservation Corps.

I am a third-year Business Data Analytics major from Arizona. This undergraduate program combines a diverse set of skills, including applications, technologies, and processes used by organizations to gain insights into their operations based on available data and statistics. Business analytics delves into the science of big data, which involves the transformation of data into predictive and actionable insights. These insights are instrumental in aiding businesses in their decision-making processes, leading to optimal results and improved performance.

This program equips students, like myself, with the ability to explore the fundamentals of data management, representation, analysis, and statistical modeling. It offers courses in machine learning, data management, data visualization, statistics, business, and optimization, along with training on various tools and systems. Upon completing my degree, I will possess the knowledge and skills to uncover trends, relationships, and patterns within data. The educational objective of this degree is to engage graduates in the design, implementation, and deployment of practical analytical applications. As a result, I will be capable of effectively and efficiently analyzing and managing information in the data-rich, ever-changing, fast-paced, and competitive business landscape.

After earning my degree and gaining relevant exposure and work experience, my ambition is to pursue a Master of Science in Business Analytics. This advanced degree will not only keep me up-to-date with the rapidly evolving market dynamics and developments but will also enable me to become a proficient data scientist. However, pursuing a master’s degree comes with a significant cost, and I may need to defer my studies to save enough funds for enrollment. This is why I am seeking a scholarship – to advance my education and become a leader in my field.

The field of big data analytics offers abundant career opportunities across various sectors, including business, science, finance, engineering management, nonprofits, healthcare, and government. To excel in this field, one must acquire a range of skills during their coursework, such as applied statistics, fraud detection, supply chain management, manufacturing design, actuarial science, and packaging analytics. Consequently, a graduate can assess organization-wide operations by employing statistical and qualitative analysis, along with data-driven insights, to evaluate past performance and inform the organization’s business strategies.

Upon graduation, I aspire to secure a position in an organization that will immerse me in both firm and market development. I will actively engage in industry-sponsored conferences and stay updated on the latest advancements in the field. My aim is to contribute to data-driven decision-making by first comprehending organizational and market dynamics to generate meaningful insights.

I plan to maintain regular interaction with customer-centric colleagues, particularly the sales force and product managers. This collaborative effort will enable us to analyze the data intelligently, gaining a better understanding of market factors that are crucial to our data interpretation. The program has emphasized the significance of adopting a multi-dimensional approach to translate data into credible, high-quality, and relevant strategic insights that support informed decision-making.

Furthermore, obtaining a master’s degree will open doors to employment opportunities that allow me to navigate both the internal and external dimensions of the industry, helping me derive value from data. I am eager to gain a deeper understanding of my field of study, which will empower me to transform abstract concepts into practical realities.

In addition to pursuing a master’s program, I will delve into end-user software packages and contribute novel, user-friendly solutions. As the corporate world increasingly embraces artificial intelligence, including neural networks and machine learning for tackling business inquiries and evaluating organizational performance, I aim to stay ahead in my field. Hence, a Master of Science in Business Analytics is pivotal to my career development.

The Earth and every tiny microbe that dwells here is my inspiration, and the intricate functions of a single cell the only proof I need to believe that the spirit lies in life itself. My one goal is to do anything I can to protect the purity of life. I am astounded by the rate at which we destroy what can never be replaced, but I have not lost hope.

Since I have been at Ohio University I have explored many different areas of study, always pursuing a way to defend the defenseless. Through our environmental group at school, Campus Greens, I began to realize the Earth needs scientists who are willing to speak for it. Our latest goal has been to stop long-wall coal mining in Dysart Woods, a virgin forest in Ohio. Many people believe the mine will destroy the woods. However, there is not enough evidence to back up that claim. I feel the only way to end the destruction of the forests is through evidence of its importance.

During my junior year of high school I studied in Israel for a quarter. This was the single most important experience of my life. I saw how diverse life is and how beautiful all of those differences are. In three months my world expanded half way around the globe. I began to realize that there were millions of species I knew nothing about. This idea is what draws me to Costa Rica. I would love to study the amazing diversity of life that the rain forests offer and the communities that they support.

What intrigued me the most about Israel was the way Zionists had managed to grow food in a desert. They came and transformed a barren land into a garden. Digging into deep rocks to find aquifers and developing elaborate drip irrigation systems to conserve water permitted the beginning of a new culture with new crops.

The entire society grew from a dream of living in peace with enough food to eat. When I learned about this I decided that after graduating I would like to go into the Peace Corps. My goal is to help improve agriculture in third world countries, without imposing cultural assimilation. I feel this program would give me insight into rural communities that thrive without submitting to westernization.

Eventually, I would like to become a professor of Tropical Agriculture. Since I have been at Ohio University, I have realized what an impact one instructor can have on future generations. Last year I took a class entitled, “Plants and People”. We learned about various plants, their origin, and how they have affected humans. While the subject was interesting, it was the professor that inspired me. Her lectures came to life with slides of trips she had taken and stories of collecting cassava with local shamans. Her passion is what led me to pursue Tropical Agriculture. I fell that the best teachers are those who can share their own experiences. I also feel that knowledge gained through experience is of greater value than hours of reading. When I am able to meet the people and smell the plants that I am learning about, the lesson becomes my reality. It is hard for me to comprehend the full beauty that lies in Costa Rica. Hopefully this program will give me the opportunity to explore what textbooks have only begun to explain.
